Study area: Spain, Cantabrian Mountains (Picos de Europa National Park)

Beginning of ringing and monitoring activities: June 2003

Ringing and field work activity: Ringing and monitoring activities during breeding season in Picos de Europa National Park, with most fieldwork between May and September. Winter monitoring activities scattered along the Cantabrian Mountains, mainly in the southern side.

Main goals of the activities:

• Atlas of Alpine passerines in Picos de Europa National Park: abundance, fine-scale distribution and important breeding areas (2019 – ongoing).

• Alpine passerines’ habitat use and selection study during breeding, with special attention to livestock grazing and climatic change effects (2006 – 2017).

• Alpine passerines’ population trend monitoring through point transects (VCP distance sampling method; 2006 – ongoing).

• Snowfinch’s breeding biology study through colour ringing and nest monitoring (2003 – ongoing).

• Snowfinch’s survival, recruitment and site fidelity monitoring through colour ringing and capture-recapture method (2004 – ongoing).

• Post-breeding and dispersal movement dynamics of Snowfinch population in Cantabrian Mountains through colour ring sighting (2007 – ongoing).

Ringing activity results:

Total number of Snowfinches ringed in Picos de Europa National Park, including all captures and recaptures, between 2003 and 2020: 275 captures and 29 recaptures (304 total).

Monitoring of reproductive biology:

Started in 2003 with the initial nest survey.

Combination of different field methods including nest monitoring, point transects, colour ring recording, bird ringing and measurement, and biological samples collection.

Up to 2020, 463 resights of colour ringed birds and 103 nest monitored.

Colour ring project:

Started in 2004 in Picos de Europa National Park.

In the period 2004-2015, 221 birds were ringed with combination of two aluminium (anodised) c-rings and a metal ring (Used colours: Black, red, yellow, green, blue and lilac).

After 2015 (ongoing) birds are ringed with blue PVC colour rings, with a white 3 alpha-numeric code (29 birds ringed).
