Conservation

The use of nest boxes

The White-Winged Snowfinch Montifringilla nivalis is a high-altitude specialist bird which can be easily seen in close proximity of mountain huts, malga (upland seasonally-occupied farm) and ski resorts.

It is considered an excellent climate change indicator and predicted to undergo dramatic range contractions in the next decades due to climate change.

This nest-box provides new nesting opportunities for this threatened species as well as allowing to better investigate the effects of climate change on the reproductive biology of this species.

Protocols

Standardized field activities

The proposal and manual "The European Snowfinch project - Demography and Population's Connectivity of the European Snowfinch Montifringilla nivalis nivalis" (still a work in progress!) will cover several aspects regarding snowfinch researches, spanning from the research network and the ongoing projects, to data usage and sharing, to the field protocols.

The latter will include population surveys, use of nest boxes, handling/ageing/sexing of individuals, ecological studies.
